Aluminium Tapes/Solid Circular Conductors

Aluminium tapes and solid circular conductors are lightweight, cost-effective alternatives to copper used in above-ground lightning protection and grounding systems. While flat tapes are traditional and easy to dress against flat surfaces, solid circular conductors (typically 8mm in diameter) offer 360-degree flexibility, making them ideal for complex building geometries and aesthetic concealment

Aluminium is frequently selected for electrical conductors because it is ductile, highly resistant to corrosion, and provides excellent conductivity relative to its weight. In lightning protection, these components serve as the air termination network (capturing strikes) and the down conductor system (channeling energy toward the earth).
Form Factors and Installation
  • Aluminium Tape (Flat): These are typically 25mm x 3mm strips manufactured to standards like BS 2898-1350. They are annealed for ease of use and are considered easier to install on flat roofs and walls.
  • Solid Circular Conductors: Usually 8mm in diameter (approx. 50mm² cross-section), these are less conspicuous than flat tapes. Unlike tapes, which bend easily in only two directions, circular rods can be bent through any plane, though a straightening tool is often required for a neat finish.
Key Advantages & Performance
  • Corrosion Resistance: Aluminium naturally forms a protective oxide coating that resists moisture, heat, and UV exposure.
  • Aesthetic Integration: Both forms are available with UV-stabilized PVC coverings in various colors (e.g., stone, white, brown) to match building exteriors.
  • Cost & Weight: Aluminium is significantly lighter and more affordable than copper, which also reduces freight costs and makes handling at heights safer during installation
