Chain Pulley Block

A chain pulley block is a manual lifting tool that uses a system of internal gears and a chain to provide a mechanical advantage. By pulling on a long loop of "hand chain," an operator can rotate a series of gears that amplify the pulling force, allowing them to lift several tons of weight with relatively little effort

Operating on the principle of mechanical advantage, a chain pulley block converts high-travel, low-force input (pulling the hand chain) into low-travel, high-force output (lifting the load). It is a purely mechanical device, meaning it requires no electricity, making it essential for construction sites, remote workshops, and shipyards.
Key Components:
  • Hand Chain & Wheel: The operator pulls the hand chain, which turns a wheel (cog) to start the internal gear mechanism.
  • Gear System: A series of larger and smaller gears inside the block amplify the input torque. This gear train is what enables a single person to lift heavy industrial loads.
  • Load Chain: A high-strength alloy steel chain (often Grade 80) that bears the actual weight of the load.
  • Braking System: Most blocks feature a ratchet and pawl mechanism or a friction brake that automatically locks the load in place the moment the operator stops pulling, preventing accidental slippage.
  • Hooks: A suspension hook at the top attaches the block to a beam or trolley, while a load hook with a safety latch secures the object being lifted
