Ethernet Cable Cat-6A (LAB Cable Cat-A)

Cat-6A Ethernet is a high-bandwidth cable capable of delivering 10 Gbps (10-Gigabit) speeds over a full distance of 100 meters. It operates at a frequency of 500 MHz—double that of Cat-6—and features enhanced shielding to minimize signal interference.

Cat-6A was introduced to address the limitations of earlier copper cabling, particularly the drop in speed over long distances. It is the recommended standard for modern high-demand environments like data centers, hospitals, and universities.

  • 10GbE Performance: While Cat-6 can hit 10 Gbps, it is limited to roughly 55 meters. Cat-6A maintains this top speed for the entire 100-meter standard run, making it essential for larger commercial spaces.
  • Physical Build:
    • Thicker Design: Cat-6A cables are noticeably thicker and stiffer due to tighter internal wire twists and additional insulation designed to combat alien crosstalk (interference between adjacent cables).
    • Shielding: It frequently comes in shielded (STP/F-UTP) variants to block heavy electromagnetic interference (EMI), though unshielded (UTP) versions are available for standard use.
    • Conductors: Typically uses 23 AWG solid copper conductors, which are better at dissipating heat for high-power PoE++ (Power over Ethernet) applications like high-end PTZ cameras.
  • Future-Proofing: It is considered a future-proof investment. While standard Gigabit internet (1 Gbps) doesn't require it today, installing Cat-6A ensures the infrastructure is ready for next-generation 10-Gigabit hardware without needing to re-pull cables.
  • Installation Note: Due to its bulk and stiffness, it has a larger bend radius, meaning it requires more room in conduits and careful handling during installation to avoid damaging the internal pairs.
