Fan Coil Unit (FCU)

A Fan Coil Unit (FCU) is a compact indoor HVAC device consisting of a heating/cooling coil and a fan. Unlike large central air handlers, FCUs are localized units typically installed in individual rooms (like hotel rooms or offices) to provide precise temperature control. They work by circulating indoor air over a coil filled with either chilled water or hot water (supplied by a central chiller or boiler) to condition the space.

Horizontal concealed FCUs are designed to be hidden away above a false ceiling, providing a "quiet and invisible" cooling or heating solution.
  • Operating Principle:
    • Indoor air is drawn into the unit by the internal fan.
    • The air passes through the Heat Exchanger Coil (the blue-finned section visible in the image), where it either loses heat to chilled water or gains heat from hot water.
    • The conditioned air is then pushed out through ductwork into the room.
  • Key Components:
    • Heat Exchanger Coil: Made of copper tubes with aluminum fins to maximize thermal transfer efficiency.
    • Centrifugal Fan & Motor: A multi-speed fan that moves air through the unit. Modern versions often use EC (Electronically Commutated) motors for extreme energy efficiency and silent operation.
    • Condensate Drain Pan: The black tray at the bottom (clearly visible in your image) collects the water droplets that form on the cold coils during dehumidification. It has a drain pipe connection to safely remove this water.
    • Control Valve Connection: The brass fittings on the side are where the external water supply and return pipes are connected.
  • Applications:
    • Widely used in hospitality (hotels) and commercial offices because they allow each room to have its own independent thermostat setting.
    • Ideal for retrofit projects where there is limited ceiling space for large central ducting.
