RJ45 Connector

An RJ45 connector is an 8-position, 8-contact (8P8C) modular plug used for Ethernet networking. It snaps into a port to create a secure electrical connection for data transmission and is compatible with Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A and Cat7 cables.

The RJ45 is the universal "handshake" of wired internet. Its design ensures that high-speed data signals remain stable and protected from interference at the point of connection.
  • Design & Structure: It features a clear plastic housing with eight gold-plated metal pins inside. When the connector is "crimped" onto a cable, these pins pierce the insulation of the eight internal wires to establish a connection.
  • Wiring Standards: To ensure global compatibility, RJ45 connectors are wired according to two specific color-coded schemes: T568A or T568B. While both work identically, T568B is the most common standard used in modern office and home installations.
  • Categories & Shielding:
    • Standard RJ45: Used for unshielded (UTP) Cat5e and Cat6 cables.
    • Shielded RJ45: Features a metal "jacket" around the plastic to ground the cable and protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI), typically used with Cat6A, Cat7, or Cat8 cables.
    • Pass-Through: A modern variant where wires feed completely through the front of the connector before crimping, making it much easier to verify the color order and ensure a solid connection.
  • The Locking Tab: The small flexible plastic lever on the top locks the connector into the port. If this tab breaks, the cable will easily fall out, often requiring the connector to be cut off and replaced.
