Scaffolding

Scaffolding is an elevated work platform made of metal pipes or timber and wooden planks. It provides a stable surface for workers to perform tasks at heights that ladders cannot safely reach, offering a much larger work area and higher weight capacity for tools and materials.

Unlike ladders, scaffolding is designed for long-duration tasks and collective safety. It creates a rigid framework that can surround an entire building, allowing multiple workers to move freely. It is governed by strict OSHA safety standards, requiring components like guardrails, toeboards, and secure anchoring to prevent collapses and falls. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Primary Scaffolding Types:
  • Supported Scaffolding: The most common type, consisting of one or more platforms supported by rigid outriggers, frames, or poles resting on the ground. Popular for residential work is the Baker Scaffolding (rolling utility scaffold), which is narrow enough to fit through doorways.
  • Suspended Scaffolding: Platforms suspended by ropes or wires from an overhead structure, commonly seen on skyscrapers for window washing or facade repair.
  • Mobile Scaffolding (Rolling Towers): A type of supported scaffold mounted on casters. Models like the Metaltech 6-ft Baker Scaffold are favorites for interior painting and drywall work because they can be easily moved.
  • Modular (System) Scaffolding: Uses pre-engineered components (like Ringlock or Cuplock systems) that "lock" together, allowing for complex shapes around circular or irregular buildings.
