SFP Module

An SFP Module is a modular interface that converts electrical signals into optical signals (for fiber) or keeps them electrical (for copper). It allows networking equipment to adapt to different cable types and distances without replacing the entire device.

SFP modules are the industry workhorse for flexible networking, standardized by the Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) to ensure cross-brand interoperability.

  • Versatility: They support various communication standards, including Gigabit EthernetFiber Channel, and SONET.
  • Key Variations:
    • Data Rates: Standard SFP supports up to 1 Gbps, while SFP+ handles up to 10 Gbps. Higher-speed variants like SFP28 (25 Gbps), QSFP+ (40 Gbps), and QSFP28 (100 Gbps) are used for data center backbones.
    • Fiber Types: Single-mode (SMF) modules are for long distances (up to 160 km), while Multi-mode (MMF) modules are for short ranges (up to 550 meters).
    • Copper SFP: These modules feature an RJ45 port, allowing you to use standard Cat5e/Cat6 Ethernet cables for distances up to 100 meters.
  • Advanced Features: Many modern modules include DDM/DOM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring), which provides real-time data on temperature, voltage, and signal strength for easier troubleshooting.
  • Hot-Swappable: They can be plugged in or removed while the equipment is running, minimizing network downtime during upgrades.
