Cable Tester

A cable tester is a handheld diagnostic tool that confirms the physical integrity of a cable by checking for continuity. It ensures that each wire is properly connected to its intended pin at both ends, identifying common assembly errors such as broken wires or incorrect termination

Long Description
Beyond basic connectivity, a cable tester acts as a comprehensive troubleshooting instrument for networking, telecommunications, and audio-visual systems. It typically consists of a main unit and a remote unit, allowing a single technician to test cables already installed through walls or ceilings. [1, 2]
Key Functions & Capabilities:
  • Continuity & Wiremapping: Verifies that every internal conductor is unbroken ("opens test") and is not touching other wires incorrectly ("shorts test"). It checks if the wires follow standards like T568A or T568B.
  • Fault Identification: Specialized modes can pinpoint specific errors like split pairs (wires from different pairs twisted together), reversed pairs, and crosstalk interference.
  • Length & Fault Location: Advanced models use Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) to measure cable length or identify the exact distance to a break or short.
  • Performance Certification: High-end certifiers, such as those from Fluke Networks, test the cable against industry standards (e.g., Cat6A) to ensure it can handle specific data speeds like 10Gbps Ethernet.
  • Specialized Testing: Some testers include features for PoE (Power over Ethernet) validation, signal attenuation measurement, and built-in tone generators for tracing unlabeled cables through walls
