Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB)

Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB), a specialized safety device designed to protect people and equipment from electrical shocks and fire hazards by detecting small "leakage" currents to the ground.

How It Works
The ELCB continuously monitors the balance between the incoming (phase) and outgoing (neutral) current.
  • Normal Operation: The current entering the circuit equals the current leaving it.
  • Fault Condition: If a person touches a live wire or there is a localized insulation failure, some current "leaks" to the ground. This creates an imbalance.
  • Tripping: When this imbalance exceeds a specific threshold (often 30mA for domestic safety), the ELCB's internal mechanism trips the switch within milliseconds, cutting off the power.

  • Test Button (Red): Used to manually simulate a leakage and verify that the internal tripping mechanism is functional. It is recommended to test this monthly.
  • Operating Lever (Grey): The main switch used to turn the circuit ON or OFF and reset the device after it has tripped.
  • Current Rating: Indicated on the side label (e.g., 30A or 40A), representing the maximum load current the device can handle.
  • Sensitivity Rating: Typically marked as  (e.g., 30mA), which defines how much leakage current is required to trigger a safety shutdown.
