Electric iron

An electric iron is a handheld appliance used to remove wrinkles and creases from fabric by applying heat, pressure, and often moisture. It features a heated triangular metal base, known as a soleplate, which is pressed against garments to smooth out fibers, ensuring a crisp and professional appearance for clothing and linens

Electric irons have evolved from simple heated metal plates into sophisticated household tools equipped with advanced materials and safety features. They operate on the principle of thermal conduction, where heat from an internal element relaxes the chemical bonds in fabric fibers, allowing them to be reshaped.
Primary Types of Irons
  • Dry Irons: The most basic version, featuring a solid soleplate without steam holes. They rely purely on heat and pressure and are ideal for delicate fabrics like silk that can be damaged by water spots.
  • Steam Irons: The standard modern choice, these include a water tank and small holes in the soleplate. They release controlled bursts of steam to penetrate thick fabrics (like denim or linen), making wrinkle removal much faster and easier.
  • Steam Generator Irons: These feature a separate, large water tank and a high-pressure boiler. They produce significantly more steam pressure than standard irons, making them perfect for heavy-duty ironing or vertical steaming of curtains and hanging clothes.
  • Travel Irons: Compact, lightweight, and often foldable versions of dry or steam irons designed for portability. Many are dual-voltage to work in different countries.
Key Features and Components
  • Soleplate Materials: Modern soleplates are often made of ceramic, stainless steel, or non-stick (Teflon) coatings. Ceramic is prized for even heat distribution and smooth gliding, while stainless steel is durable and easy to clean.
  • Adjustable Thermostats: Essential for safety, these allow users to select the correct temperature based on the fabric type (e.g., low for synthetics, high for cotton).
  • Auto-Shutoff: A critical safety feature that turns the iron off if it is left motionless for a certain period, preventing fire hazards.
  • Self-Cleaning & Anti-Calc: These systems help remove mineral buildup (scale) from the steam vents, extending the life of the appliance in areas with hard water
