Main Distribution Board (MDB)

An MDB is a metal-enclosed panel that serves as the heart of a facility's low-voltage distribution system. It receives the main incoming supply and uses high-capacity circuit breakers and busbars to distribute electricity to sub-distribution boards (SMDBs) or major equipment. Its primary role is to centralize power management while providing critical protection against electrical faults.

The MDB is engineered to handle significant electrical loads and serves as the first stage of localized power control after the main utility transformer. [1, 2]
  • Core Functionality:
    • Incoming Power Management: It typically houses a large main incomer, such as an Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) or Molded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB), to control the entire facility's supply.
    • Power Distribution: High-conductivity copper or aluminum busbars distribute power internally to various outgoing feeders.
    • System Protection: Integrated safety devices—including surge protection devices (SPDs), fuses, and ground leakage protection—safeguard the building from overloads and short circuits.
  • Key Components:
    • Enclosure: Robust steel cabinets often rated IP42 to IP65 to protect against dust and water.
    • Metering & Monitoring: Digital or analog meters provide real-time tracking of voltage, current, and total energy consumption.
    • Separation Forms: Designed with internal segregation (Forms 1 to 4) to ensure that a fault in one section does not compromise the entire board.
  • Applications:
    • Essential for high-rise buildings, manufacturing plants, data centers, and large commercial malls to manage complex energy demands.
    • Commonly built to handle currents from 100A up to 6300A and operating voltages up to 690V AC.
