Patch Panel (24-Port or 48-Port modular panels)

Patch Panel is a mounted hardware assembly that serves as the "switchboard" for a building's network. It provides a static location to terminate long-distance "horizontal" cables, allowing you to easily connect them to network switches using short patch cords.

In professional networking, you never plug the thick, solid-core wires coming from your walls directly into a switch. Instead, you terminate them into a Patch Panel to protect the cables and improve organization.
  • Organization and Maintenance: It keeps the rack tidy by labeling each port (e.g., "Room 201" or "Accounting"). This makes troubleshooting much faster, as you can identify and swap connections without touching the permanent wiring behind the walls.
  • Port Density: Available in various sizes, most commonly 24-port or 48-port configurations, designed to fit into a standard 19-inch server rack (occupying 1U or 2U of space).
  • Types of Patch Panels:
    • Punch-Down Panel: The wires are permanently "punched" into the back of the panel using a tool. These are the most common and reliable for fixed installations.
    • Keystone (Unloaded) Panel: Features empty square holes where you can snap in individual Cat6, Cat6a, or even Fiber/HDMI keystone jacks. This offers the most flexibility.
    • Feed-Through Panel: Features RJ45 ports on both the front and back (using couplers), allowing you to simply plug in cables on both sides.
  • Performance Standards: Like cables, panels are rated for Cat6 (1Gbps/250MHz) or Cat6a (10Gbps/500MHz) and can be Shielded to prevent interference.
