Pipe bender

A pipe bender is a specialized tool designed to bend metal pipes (copper, steel, or aluminum) and conduits to specific angles. Using a combination of a shaped "die" and mechanical leverage, it allows for smooth, uniform curves, which are essential for plumbing, electrical wiring, and automotive fabrication.

Long Description
A pipe bender is an indispensable tool for any trade that requires the redirection of fluid or electrical lines. It functions by supporting the outer wall of the pipe while applying concentrated pressure to the inner radius, ensuring the pipe maintains its structural integrity and internal diameter throughout the bend.
How it Works:
The pipe is placed into a former (a semi-circular die) that matches the pipe's outer diameter. As the user applies force through the long handles—or via a hydraulic ram—the pipe is forced to conform to the shape of the die. High-quality benders often feature degree markings on the head, allowing the operator to achieve precise 45°, 90°, or custom-angle bends repeatedly.
Types of Pipe Benders:
  • Manual Lever Benders: Best for small-diameter soft tubing like copper or aluminum; common in HVAC and brake line repair.
  • Conduit Benders (Hickeys): Used by electricians to bend EMT conduit for running wiring along walls or through floors.
  • Hydraulic Benders: Use a hydraulic pump to apply immense force, making them suitable for thick-walled steel pipes and heavy industrial use.
  • Mandrel Benders: The most advanced type, which inserts a solid rod (mandrel) inside the pipe during the bend to prevent any wrinkling or thinning of the walls, typical in high-end automotive exhaust work.
