Stone

In geology, stone (or rock) is a naturally occurring solid mass of minerals that forms the Earth's crust. Beyond geology, "stone" refers to these materials used in construction, landscaping, and design.

Common Types of Stone
Stones are classified into three main groups based on how they were formed: [1, 2]
  • Igneous: Formed from cooled magma or lava. Examples include Granite (highly durable, used for countertops) and Basalt (strong, used in roads and foundations).
  • Sedimentary: Formed by the accumulation of minerals and organic particles over time. Common types are Limestone (versatile for flooring and facades) and Sandstone (popular for its rustic, textured look).
  • Metamorphic: Formed when existing rocks are changed by extreme heat and pressure. Famous examples include Marble (prized for elegance and veining), Quartzite (extremely hard), and Slate (split into thin sheets for roofing).
  • Natural vs. Engineered Stone
While natural stone is quarried directly from the earth, Engineered Stone (like quartz) is a man-made composite of crushed stone and resin. [1, 2]
    • Natural Stone: Offers unique, one-of-a-kind patterns but requires regular sealing to prevent stains.
    • Engineered Stone: Offers total consistency in color and pattern, is non-porous (no sealing needed), but can be damaged by high heat.
