A Type 1 Surge Protection Device (SPD) is designed to protect an electrical installation against high-energy surges, including those associated with direct lightning-current effects where the installation's protection design requires it. It is selected according to the building's lightning protection arrangement, earthing system, prospective fault current, and electrical distribution design. It is not a substitute for lower-level protection where coordinated protection is required.
